Sheffield United captain Chris Basham suffered a severe lower leg injury during his team's Premier League match at Fulham on Saturday.
Basham, 35, sustained the injury to his standing leg as he attempted to make a cross in the first half.
The fixture at Craven Cottage was stopped for more than 10 minutes while the centre-back received treatment.
He was carried off the pitch on a stretcher to a standing ovation, as the away supporters chanted his name.
The Blades player responded by waving to the crowd and giving a thumbs-up as he left the field. An ambulance was seen leaving the stadium moments later.
"We send our best wishes to Bash, and will communicate updates as and when we have them," Sheffield United said on X, formerly Twitter.
Basham, who has also had spells at Blackpool and Bolton, was making his 394th appearance for United.
