A group of villagers hunted and killed a hyena that had attacked a family in Bute, Wajir County.

The wild animal had raided Huran village and bit a man and his three children as they slept.

The family said they were sleeping in their manyatta when the animal struck on September 15 morning.

The mother of the home said she responded with sticks attacking the animal.

She raised an alarm, alerting locals who responded and chased the hyena into bushes where they cornered it.

The victims were rushed to Bute Sub-County hospital with multiple bites where they were treated and discharged in stable condition, police said.

Kenya Wildlife Service personnel in the area were alerted and visited the affected family as part of the probe into the attack.

Such attacks are common in the area. This is part of the wildlife-human conflict that is common in places near national parks.

KWS has mounted a campaign to address the menace, which includes fencing the areas.

The government and conservation groups have a compensation program for people and herders whose livestock are killed by wild animals.

Officials said loss of habitat and climate change threatened the number of wild animals the wild and that their future looked "bleak".

The officials say policies aimed at enabling communities to co-exist with wildlife were vital.
