Jua Kali artisans have signed a contract with the government worth Sh125 million for the construction of affordable houses in Thika town.

President William Ruto made the revelation while launching the project on Wednesday which will see the construction of 970 housing units.

"And that's just for making doors, these guys will make doors for us," Ruto said while instructing Housing PS Charles Hinga to ensure the contract is signed.

The President said the deal is one that will incorporate those who will supply windows, cement, stones and those who will undertake carpentry works, masons and electricians.

Besides, Ruto said the project will provide employment opportunities to 2,500 youth within Kiambu county.

He revealed that there are other ten such projects that will come up in the county in two weeks' time which will see the construction of 10,000 housing units.

"We will need about 20,000 youth in Kiambu who will do this work. In the next two weeks, all those plans will be complete," Ruto assured county residents.

He urged the county administration to grant the requisite approvals on time to enable the speedy commencement of the projects.

The President had earlier in the day launched another affordable housing project in Gichugu, Kirinyaga county.

This, he said, is part of government's ambitious vision of constructing 200,000 housing units annually and providing one million jobs for youths.

Ruto said this week, the government has advertised another 50,000 housing units in the country.
