Some 148 students of Ikonge Girls Secondary School in Nyamira County are currently admitted to various hospitals in Nyamira county over suspected water or food poisoning.

Nyamira North subcounty director of education Clare Oyula said they received reports of students complaining of stomachache and lower abdominal pain.

"The students have been rushed to Mogumo Health Centre and others to Ekerenyo subcounty hospital for medication," Oyula said.

According to Oyula most of the students are in stable condition and will be discharged.

County Health CEC Timothy Ombati said three students who are in critical condition have been referred to Nyamira County Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

"We received a distress call from the school and our team responded on time and we are glad that the students have been admitted to our various hospitals and are being attended to by medics," the CEC said.

He also said a team of public health officials has been dispatched to the school to establish what might be the problem.

"We have taken stool samples from the students and those who are in our health facilities are in stable condition," Ombati said.

"We have referred three of the students to our Main hospital in Nyamira town for specialized treatment."
