Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has vowed to protect Nairobi residents against demonstrations.

The Governor noted that the cycle of demonstrations witnessed in Kenya after every five years will come to an end.

“We cannot have a cycle in this country that every 5 years we burn our country. It is easy to destroy than build," Sakaja said on Sunday.

“I want to tell those planning the demonstrations on Wednesday, you will not succeed this time. You will not succeed because we are going to get a breakthrough for this country,” he added.

His statement comes after Raila Odinga-led Azimio la Umoja coalition said the anti-government demonstrations will go on for three days this week.

In a statement, Azimio la Umoja said due to requests from all sectors, the peaceful protests will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Raila said the demos will be held whether the government issues a permit or not.

"We will have countrywide protests next week on Wednesday whether the government likes it or not," he said.

Sakaja vowed to protect Nairobi residents against protests.

“We will protect the people of Nairobi and that is my commitment to you,” Sakaja added.

President William Ruto said he will use all means to stop the Opposition leader.

"Raila Odinga, I won't allow you to seek power on the back of the blood of Kenyans. I will stop you," he said.

The President said the protests have led to the loss of lives and properties.

"We will not allow the handshake brothers to hold our country ransom and to take it, hostage, by causing violence, mayhem and anarchy. Tutawakalia ngumu vile mumesema, they will not succeed," he said.

The President said that he would personally deal with the demonstrations that have been called by the opposition to protest the rising cost of living.

“Raila should learn that elections ended last year and we shall not allow any extra-constitutional means to join the government,” Ruto said.
