Former Agriculture CS Peter Munya has made a 'comeback' to politics after months of quiet since Kenya Kwanza came to power.

The CS, a close ally of Azimio leader Raila Odinga, had taken a back seat from Azimio activities in the recent past and was missing in action during last Friday's Saba Saba rally.

But on Monday, Munya announced that he will lead a morning rally in Meru town, an afternoon rally in Muthara market and an evening rally in Maua town on Wednesday.

The rally was called by Raila for his supporters to continue mounting pressure on President William Ruto's government over failure to lower taxes and the cost of living.

"I will preside over three Azimio rallies on July 12, 2023, in Meru county. The agenda will be the unbearable high cost of living and insecurity in the region, " Munya said.

In a new twist, Raila has adopted a new strategy by delegating Azimio leaders to lead protests in their own regions.

This is a shift from previous arrangement where all Azimio leaders would converge in Nairobi to lead the protests.

On Friday during the Saba Saba rally for instance, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka led the protests in Kathiani in Machakos county.

He said the journey of protests against Kenya Kwanza's dictatorship had just begun.

Munya served as the CS for Agriculture from January 14, 2020, to October 2022.

The former CS handed over the office to his successor, Mithika Linturi.

Previously, Munya served as the Trade CS from 2018 to 2020, before he was appointed to replace Mwangi Kiunjuri in the Agriculture docket.

Before that, he was the Cabinet secretary in charge of the EAC ministry in 2018. He had previously worked in the ministry as an assistant minister in the grand coalition government under late President Mwai Kibaki.

Munya also served as Assistant Minister for Internal Security and Provincial Administration in 2006.

He was the first Meru county governor where he served from 2013 to 2017.

He contested for the position in 2017 but lost to former Governor Kiraitu Murugi.

Before that, he served as Tigania East MP, where he was first elected in 2002.
