Officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission have arrested a police officer attached to Mutuati Police Station in Igembe North, Meru County over alleged bribery.
The arrest followed a complaint by a boda boda operator that the police officer allegedly confiscated his motorcycle for no lawful reason then demanded a bribe of Sh10,000 to release it.
EACC detectives arrested the officer on Thursday following investigations into the complaint received on June 7, 2023.
According to EACC, the boda boda operator was riding from Mutuati market when he was stopped by police officers at the Kongoitime area.
The officers demanded that he produces ownership documents for the the motorbike he was riding.
He, however, did not have the documents with him at the time as he understandably never carries them around wherever he goes.
The officers confiscated the motorcycle and told him to present proof of ownership to Kamweline Police Station.
The complainant alleged that he presented a sale agreement of the motorcycle on the same day but the police officers said the agreement was not genuine.
They then demanded a bribe of Sh10,000 in order to release the motorcycle.
The complainant said that being unable to raise the amount, he resorted to reporting the matter to the EACC for intervention.
After his arrest, EACC detectives took the officer to Ruiri Police Station where they processed him.
He was later released on a cash bail of Sh20,000 pending completion of investigations.
The arrest was confirmed by EACC head of corporate communication Eric Ngumbi.
