Foreign and Diaspora Affairs CS Alfred Mutua has thanked the Romanian government for recalling its Ambassador to Kenya Dragos Tigau.

This is after he allegedly made disparaging and racist remarks against Africans by calling African group members "Monkeys" during a meeting held in Nairobi.

Mutua said the government did the right thing by summoning the ambassador to relook into the allegations.

"The envoy’s government has done the only right thing they could do. All African and black people will not accept derogatory treatment that we have endured for centuries to continue being propagated anywhere," Mutua said.

He said that all races and cultures must be respected by every individual.

"Respect for all races and cultures is not an option but a must for all," Mutua said.

He added that he has been in conversation with the African Group, United Nations and Romanian government since the shocking and despicable act occurred.

Tigau was accused of using a monkey reference during a meeting at the UN headquarters on April 26.

His country termed his statement as an isolated case that should not affect the relations between Romania and African countries.

"We express our hope that this isolated incident will not affect the deep relations between Romania and the African countries, especially considering that Romanian diplomacy considers the development of relations with Africa, " the statement added.

They noted that their relations with African countries are important to them as they are based on partnership and mutual respect.

They added that such behaviours do not reflect the institutional and human values that underpin the diplomatic action of Romania.
