Kenyans can now pay Sh6,000 for a needy family unable to pay for their medical bills.

This is after the Kenyatta National Hospital launched "Adopt a Patient", an initiative that aims to support patients who have accumulated huge hospital bills but are unable to pay.

The initiative was officially launched by the Spouse of the Prime Cabinet Secretary Tessie Mudavadi on Tuesday.

KNH chief executive officer Evanson Kamuri said the hospital has identified 42 needy patients with Ushiriki Wema adopting seven patients and Ahadi Kenya adopting three patients.

To date, the hospital is struggling due to more than Sh8 billion owed by patients who are unable to pay their bills.

"We want to start adopting families especially people who can't pay their bills. We will be working near NHIF to ensure the programme is sustainable," Kamuri said.

Ahadi Kenya CEO Stanley Kamau said social workers are doing due diligence to find those who are poor and in need of help, adding that sometimes patients have to wait for four weeks.
