Police have launched a manhunt for two suspects who escaped from custody in Kakamega.

Police said the two suspects escaped from the station's cell under unclear circumstances on Thursday morning.

The suspects were accused of robbery with violence and were reported missing by the officer on duty.

A statement on Friday by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the two suspects, Denis Indeche, 26 and Allan Kemoli, 29, had been arrested a few days ago.

"Indeche had been arrested three days ago by police from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, after being on the run for weeks," DCI said.

DCI said that Indeche is wanted for numerous armed robberies in Western Kenya.

According to DCI, the suspect is accused of attacking a senior DCI officer based in Kakamega, who escaped death with life-threatening injuries.

DCI added that the two police officers who were on duty when the duo escaped have since been placed in custody to assist with investigations.
