The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs on Wednesday night evacuated 342 civilians who were trapped in Sudan following the ongoing conflict.
The ministry announced that a special multi-agency team was created to facilitate entry, departure, transit, and movement within Kenya of affected staff and dependants.
“The Government of the Republic of Kenya through the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs last night facilitated the evacuation of more nationals and personnel of United Nations, Agencies, the Diplomatic Corps, and International and Regional Organizations accredited to Nairobi who were trapped in the Sudan conflict,” the ministry tweeted on Thursday.
The civilians arrived from Khartoum through the port of Sudan by ferry to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and were flown into the country with two aircrafts.
The Evacuees were received at JKIA by Cabinet Secretary of Ministry of Co-operatives & Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Simon Chelgui and Principal Secretary of the state department for Diaspora Affairs Roseline Njogu.
CS Chelgui reiterated Kenya's commitment to ensuring the safe return of all Kenyans and other nationals that wish to return from Sudan to Kenya.
The first group of Kenyans evacuated from the conflict-torn nation of Sudan jetted into the country on April 25, 2023.
The 39 evacuees who were students, arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and were received by Defense Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.
19 Kenyans together with 19 Somalis and one Arabian national were part of the group that landed at JKIA.
