Governor James Orengo has launched the construction of 150-kilometre road networks across Siaya County.
The road projects so far launched by the governor, in the last one and a half weeks, will cost his administration a total of Sh 140 million.
These projects target to improve connectivity across the six sub-counties of Siaya, according to Governor Orengo.
They will also improve access to markets, schools, health facilities and bolster trade and facilitate the movement of people within the rural county.
The works will include grading, gravelling, erecting of culverts and reshaping of roads which are being opened up for the first time, according to road engineers from the department.
90 per cent of the works will be the maintenance of the county road while the rest will be the opening of new roads that non-existed.
Ugunja Sub-county alone will have 19 roads improved and made motorable, Orengo said.
The road network improvement in the sub-county will cost the county government Sh 52 million.
"In Ugunja sub-county, 7 roads will be done in Sigomere ward, 9 in Ugunja ward and 3 in Sidindi ward," Orengo said.
"Our journey to developing every part of this county continues as we launched several roads, commissioned an ECD and a water project, all worth Sh74 million in East Yimbo and West Sakwa wards in Bondo sub-county," Orengo said on Thursday.
A week ago, the governor commissioned road projects worth Sh18 million in the East Gem ward in the Gem constituency.
The road network covers Marenyo-Sinaga-Lihanda-Bar Kalare roads and in North Gem, it covered Kodiaga-Rabango Road which links Gem constituency and Alego-Usonga.
In Usonga ward, Orengo's administration has since launched the improvement of an 11-kilometre road network that will serve market centres which include Benga, and Nyadorera.
It will further serve educational centres such as Uhere ECD, Uhembo Primary, Benga Polytechnic, and Ulupi ECD.
Speaking to the Star, the governor said the roads will allow residents of the ward to access health centres such as Benga and Sumba Health Centres.
"Muhondo sports centre and Rice farms at Uwasi and Mulua will also be accessed through the road," he said.
In the West Sakwa ward in Bondo sub-county, the county government is doing a 24-kilometre road at a cost of Sh15 million to serve market centres such as Got Winyo, Milenga, and Kapiyo.
" The road will also serve Nyawita secondary school, and Milenga school thereby boosting connectivity, in the areas" he noted.
In East Yimbo, the county government is already working on a 23-kilometre road project at a cost of Sh18 million.
This road, according to the governor will provide access to market centres and various important facilities including hospitals and schools.
"It will further provide access to beaches in the area, among them is Oele Beach," he added.
In North Gem, Yala Township ward and East Gem wards in Gem constituency, a 17-kilometre road network that will cost 43 million is being implemented by the county government.
The governor said the roads will provide a linkage between Gem and Alego Usonga sub-counties and the facilities in between.
"A linkage within Gem Sub-county in Yala Township and East Gem wards will see easy access to market centres, churches and Schools in the area," Orengo said.
He said his administration has also launched road projects in Sigomere where 33 kilometres of the road network will be improved at a cost of Sh22 million.
These roads, according to the governor will serve market centres, hospitals and schools in Sigomere and neighbouring areas.
It will also be a relief to Sugarcane farmers in the area.
" In Ugunja, we are doing a 30-kilometre road at a cost of Sh22.6 million," he said.
The road network will provide access to nearby schools like Uria Magoya and Ogeda Primary and Secondary schools and will also give access to the nearby Chief’s camp.
In Sidindi, a 12-kilometre road has been launched by the governor. It will cost Sh 7.5 million.
The road will also serve market centres, hospitals and schools in Sidindi and the neighbouring areas.
