A police officer is nursing a self-inflicted gunshot wound that he sustained during an operation in Huruma, Nairobi.

The constable of police is in stable condition in the hospital, police said.

A man had tried to stab and kill his parents in the area when police were called to the scene.

The 23-year-old man had locked his parents in their house and tried to kill them by stabbing them.

Police say they are investigating a case of attempted murder following the Monday, March 13 night incident.

The father of the man called the police saying he had locked them in the house and wanted to kill them.

Police rushed to the scene and realised the said suspect was acting wild while armed with a knife.

The officers said he was also a notorious mobile snatcher well known in the area.

It was then that the team attempted to disarm him of the knife but he resisted and tried to stab one of the officers, police said.

This prompted the targeted officer to act in defence and triggered his rifle, which discharged and injured him in the left leg.

This, according to police, prompted more officers to arrive at the scene and managed to arrest and disarm the suspect.

He was booked in custody pending a probe.

The knife he had was kept as an exhibit, police said.

The injured officer was rushed to hospital and admitted in stable condition, Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said.

He added they are investigating the suspect over a series of incidents in the area.
