Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance has opposed the creation of Cabinet Administrative Secretaries terming them another layer of government when Kenyans are battling high costs.

National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi said the expansion of the Executive will mean a greater tax burden on Kenyans to maintain them in their work offices.

Wandayi blasted the Kenya Kwanza administration, accusing the new government of doing opposite of what they promised Kenyans during campaigns — AUSTERITY.

“Azimio La Umoja Coalition Party is alarmed. Despite the prevailing difficult economic times that require a rethink and re-organisation of government spending priorities, the Kenya Kwanza regime is proceeding with to recruit tens of Cabinet Assistant Secretaries, Wandayi said in a statement.

Despite the need for austerity, the regime is determined on costly expansion of the Executive,” he said.

“Indeed, we are dismayed that William Ruto who campaigned against BBI on grounds that it was meant to create positions is now busy creating positions that will add no value whatsoever to service delivery and steering the country in the right direction.”

The Ugunja lawmaker saidCAS positions add no value and are a total waste of taxpayers’ money.

The move, he noted, is insensitive, wrong and grossly misplaced.

“The new layer of bureaucracy will come with another set of offices, staff per diems, salaries and equipment. including fuel guzzlers that will consume another set of billions of money from over-taxed suffering Kenyans with no tangible returns,” the Ugunja MP said.

“We reject this total waste of resources, time and misuse of Public Service Commission.”

Wandayi spoke on a day the Public Service Commission started interviews for more than 200 candidates shortlisted for the post introduced during retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime.

The minority leader instead urged the government to consider lowering the cost of basic goods like unga, electricity and fuel, financing the basic education of children and providing water to drought-stricken communities.
