JKIA Terminal 2 to be closed ahead of Jill Biden's visit

This will be her first visit in the country since her husband, Joe Biden, was elected the US President.

Movement at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport will be affected ahead of US First Lady Jill Biden's visit.

In a statement, Kenya Airport Authority announced the closure of Terminal Two at JKIA on Friday and Sunday at specific hours.

"JKIA will be facilitating a VVIP movement in the course of this month," reads the letter dated February 20, 2023.

To that effect, Terminal 2 should be cleared of any aircraft and vehicles on Friday, February 24, 2023 from 11: 00 am  to 5pm.

At the same time, the same terminal will also be cleared of the same  on Sunday February 26, 2023 from 6am to 6pm.

As a result of VVIP movement, KAA  has advised the JKIA stakeholders to relocate their operations to terminal one within the  stipulated period to allow smooth facilitation of Jill Biden's visit.

This will be Jill Biden's first visit to the country since her husband, Joe Biden, was elected the US President.

During her visit, she will meet and engage with those affected by drought and facing food insecurity.

“Then in Kenya, I will hear from those affected by the ongoing historic drought and food insecurity, which has been exacerbated by the ripple effects of Russia’s assault on Ukraine,” she said.

At a cost of Sh1.7 billion Terminal 2  at the JKIA was opened in April 2015 by Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The state-of-the-art prefabricated terminal’s additional capacity brings JKIA’s capacity to 7.5 million passengers annually, compared to the estimated 6.5 million passengers who go through the airport. 

It was originally intended to relieve overcrowding.

The terminal houses international & domestic check-in desks and boarding gates.

Current lounges at Terminal 2 include the Mara Lounge and Mount Kenya Lounge - both at the airside, Level 1 and open 24 hours.

Terminal 2 sits on 10,000 square meters. Fly 540, Sax, Jubba and African Air Express are some of the airlines that have already been operating from the new station.
