Attorney General Justin Muturi has asked President William Ruto not to allow former IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati to retire.

Speaking on Tuesday, the AG said Ruto's administration should give Chebukati another job.

"Let us emulate Chebukati's work. You are not retiring. I hope this administration led by Ruto finds some other place for you to continue leading this country with that kind of resolve," he said.

After six years of service, Chebukati and commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye leave the IEBC as their terms end on January 17.

Chebukati took over from Issack Hassan and his nine-member commission who opted to resign.

They resigned from office after the opposition Nasa, led by Raila Odinga, protested and called for their removal for allegedly bungling the 2013 general election.

In October 2022, Ruto declared vacancies at the commission as Chebukati and the two commissioners prepared to exit.

Shortly before Chebukati announced the 2022 presidential election results, IEBC vice chairperson Juliana Cherera and four other commissioners disowned the results.

Cherera and commissioners Francis Wanderi and Justus Nyang'aya later resigned from office.

Commissioner Irine Masit, who is on suspension, is fighting for survival before a tribunal.
