Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives in collaboration with officers from Kenya Revenue Authority have shut down an unlicensed alcohol manufacturing plant in Njiru, Nairobi County.

The officials raided the plant on Monday morning and uncovered hundreds of counterfeit KRA stamps.

The operation was led by detectives from the Economic and Commercial Crimes Unit, who also found and seized over 5,000 stickers of alcoholic drinks.

Detectives have intensified a crackdown on counterfeit and illegal products.

"Workers at the plant who seemed to have gotten wind of the detectives’ arrival fled the premises," DCI said.

Detectives have since launched a manhunt on the owners of the plant, which is located along Njiru-Mwiki road.

In October, President William Ruto issued a directive to the police to conduct intelligence-led operations targeting counterfeit goods.

This is in a bid to rejuvenate the country’s ailing economy, which has lost a considerable part of its revenue to tax cheats.

In November, DCI detectives and KRA officials recovered over 800,000 bottles of alcohol and 130,000 fake KRA stamps in a raid at an alcohol manufacturing plant in Athi River.

The consignment of 33,529 cartons each containing 25 bottles includes, all without KRA stamps.

A brief made to police and KRA bosses said the factory stores remain closed since November 7.
