World population is expected to cross eight billion mark on November 15, United Nation's World population prospects indicates.

Current population as per the Worldometer is 7.99 billion growing at the rate of 0.84 per cent, an estimation of 67 million per year.

In its latest revision, UN says this is a drop from 1.05 per cent in 2020, 1.08 per cent in 2019, 1.10 per cent in 2018, and 1.12 per cent in 2017.

The report states that the growth has been at its slowest rate since 1950, having fallen to less that one per cent in 2020. It is attributed to low fertility rates and rates of emigration across the world.

"Annual growth rate reached its peak in the late 1960s, when it was at around 2 percent. The rate of increase has nearly halved since then, and will continue to decline in the coming years," reads the report.

It adds, "In 61 countries or areas, the population is expected to decrease by at least one per cent over the next three decades, as a result of sustained low levels of fertility."

Of the total number of people on the globe, only seven countries hold half of it. China and India are the only two countries in the world with a billion population representing an 18.5 and 17.7 percentages of the world's share respectively.

While China has 1.45 billion, India comes second with 1.41 billion as USA follows with 335 million. Others in the order are Indonesia 280 million and Pakistan 231million.

Nigeria is the leading African country with 216 million, followed by Brazil 216 million.

As per the ranking, Kenya emerges at position 27 in the world and seventh in the continent with a population of 53 million out of 235 countries.

The country's population is just 0.7 per cent of world population.

Ranked above Kenya also are Ethiopia 114 million, Egypt 102 million, DR Congo 89 million and Tanzania 59 million.

The UN further projects that the population is set to hit nine billion by 2037 and 10 billion in 2058.

Previous milestones shows that the five billion mark was attained in 1987, four billion in 1974, three billion in 1960 and two billion in 1930.

The human population hit one billion in 1804.

Distribution per continents shows that Asia accounts for the largest number of human beings with 4.64 billion, Africa 1.34 billion, Europe 747 million, Latin America and the Caribbean 653 million, Northern America 368 million and Oceania 42 million.
