Nominated Senator Beth Syengo wants the appointment of county executive and chief officers in all counties to be audited.

Syengo requested the Standing Committee on National Cohesion, Equal Opportunity and Regional Integration to look into the appointments.

“The committee should scrutinise affirmative actions being implemented by the counties in the promotion of women in leadership positions,” she said.

Syengo was speaking during Senate proceedings on Tuesday, after a week of not being in session.

She said it had been 10 years since the new constitution’s mandate of two-thirds gender representation in public office was put in place.

She said the government had not adopted legislation to fully implement this basic requirement.

“At the core of the constitution of Kenya is the belief that there can be progress in society if all citizens participate fully in their governance and all are included in affairs of the Republic,” she said.

She said it was her duty as the President of Women of ODM to raise awareness in ensuring more representation of women at the national level.

Numerous lobbyists have said they will push the matter of two-thirds gender balance until public offices comply.

The Center for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW) Kenya reminded Parliament that the matter has been taken to court before and it can be done again.
