President William Ruto has wished the Hindu community in Kenya a happy Diwali festival.
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a Hindu religious festival and one of the most important festivals within Hinduism.
"We wish all those celebrating Diwali a happy and rewarding festival. May this celebration inspire you to work together for the good of self and humanity," Ruto said in a statement on Twitter.
Nairobi Woman rep Esther Passaris also sent her message of goodwill to the Hindu community during the festivities.
"Wishing all our Hindu sisters and brothers a Happy Diwali Festival. May their prayers today steer our world towards love, spiritual growth and understanding," she said in a tweet.
The festival which started on Monday will last for five days.
Many had anticipated that the government would declare Monday a public holiday to mark the festivities.
But the Interior Ministry released a statement on Sunday dismissing a fake gazette notice that was doing the rounds on social media to that effect.
"Members of the public are advised that this is FAKE notice that should be ignored," the statement said.
Our attention has been drawn to a purported Gazette notice issued by @InteriorKE declaring Monday 24th October 2022 a public holiday.
