The percentage of students with knowledge of contraceptives is higher than the percentage of those who have used or prefer using contraceptives.
Effective Sexual and reproductive health and rights entail safe decision-making and the right to live healthy and productive lives.
Age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education to children and young people provides information about sexuality, body changes, and sexual orientation and also enhances positive values and attitudes towards their reproductive health.
It helps in giving information on gender-based violence prevention and this will prepare young adolescents on matters of respect for the other person.
Comprehensive sex education enables the development of self-esteem, and respect for human rights promotes gender equality and enhances skills for positive decision-making.
Sexuality education will generate demand for reproductive health services by young people.
This includes the demand for contraceptives and family planning services and also reduces the age for one to have their first sex experience.
To achieve this, communication on sexuality between parents, guardians, teachers and adolescents should be promoted.
We must also create awareness of the dangers of myths and misconceptions that hinder the provision of comprehensive sex education in learning institutions.
Comprehensive sexuality education ensures individuals especially adolescents gain better knowledge about their rights and make informed choices about sex and relationships.
Age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education will provide a right-based approach towards the prevention of HIV and how to tackle stigma and discrimination towards the people infected.
