Government spokesman Cyrus Oguna on Friday said Kenyans should shun hate speech to avoid falling prey to misinformation, disinformation and propaganda being peddled by selfish individuals.

He said the individuals who have the habit must be reminded that Kenya is bigger than each and everyone and they should desist from such behaviour.

"Political leaders and other actors are equally hereby encouraged to offer accurate and clear messages of calm to their supporters, and not engage in incendiary rhetoric or pronouncements that have the potential to generate tension and negative emotions," he said.

"We encourage every individual to ensure that their actions and behaviour are directed towards preserving and consolidating our hard-earned peace, stability, and national unity."

However, Oguna said Kenyans have tried to exercise their civic responsibility in an orderly and peaceful fashion.

"The conduct of our people, the National Police Service and the IEBC during the voting period was historic. All stakeholders, including international election observers, awarded an above average score to our election," he said.

He applauded those who lost but willingly conceded defeat and openly congratulated their opponents.

"We salute all those that have lost and have been magnanimous enough in their defeat, and who understood that election is nothing but a contest that comes periodically. This is certainly a clear sign of democratic maturity."
