President Uhuru Kenyatta will be in full gear this weekend as he commissions and inspects various projects in Mt Kenya.
For the past two weeks, he has gone across the country to cement his legacy before the clock runs out on his presidential term next week, as Kenya goes to the ballot.
On Saturday, Uhuru will inspect the ongoing 84 km road project from Kenol to Sagana.
At the cost of Sh17 billion, the road project starts from Kenol Township in Murang’a through Makutano and Sagana in Kirinyaga County, proceeds to Kambiti in Machakos and ends at Marua in Nyeri County.
Phase-I of the project will see 36 km of road constructed from Sagana to Marua, while Phase-II will stretch for 48 km from Kenol to Sagana.
The project is also scheduled to be fully completed a year earlier.
President Uhuru will then head to Othaya where he will commission the Mwai Kibaki referral hospital as well as the Kibaki oxygen production unit.
The level 6 facility with a 350-bed capacity was in April 2022, renamed Mwai Kibaki Hospital in honor of the late former president.
The hospital’s director Peter Munene stated that the decision was made following consultations between Kibaki’s family and government officials.
Uhuru will then head to Nyeri where he will lead the groundbreaking for Dedan Kimathi cancer centre.
Later he will proceed to Kieni East in Chaka and commission the Chaka modern market that is expected to accommodate 1,200 traders.
Traders who were selling in the open along the Nyeri-Nanyuki road already started occupying the Sh1 billion modern market.
The facility, which was constructed by the national government has a bus park where all passengers will be picked up and dropped off by public service vehicles.
The President will also commission the Thika-Nanyuki metre gauge railway and Chaka railway station.
In 2020, The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) started rehabilitation work on the 178km Thika-Nanyuki railway line, which has been in disuse for decades.
Work to restore the moribund line was done by the National Youth Service (NYS) assisted by labour from local communities helping to secure and clear the corridor in preparation for major works.
The new Chaka Railway Station in Nyeri is located 152km from the Nairobi Central Railway Station on the Nairobi - Nanyuki route and was constructed as part of the renaissance of the Thika - Nanyuki MGR line.
Uhuru will finish his day at Naru Moru where he will inspect the Naru Moru level 4 hospitals in Kieni.
Kieni residents had earlier called upon the government to officially open the newly built Sh335 million hospital to ease their suffering in accessing medical attention.
They claimed they had gone through a lot of challenges while seeking medical attention, citing that they mostly depend on neighbouring hospitals either in Nyeri town, Nyahururu or Nanyuki.
