Eldoret Catholic Bishop Dominic Kimengich has called for stern action against those involved with distribution of hate leaflets in Rift Valley.

The man of God cautioned the government and political leaders against underrating the threats just a week to the August 9 polls.

"It's a very worrying trend because these things incite people," Kimengich said.

Rift Valley has in the previous election years been a hot spot for poll-related violence.

"Elections will come and go but people will be there. So let us not use this opportunity to threaten people," he added.

The bishop said the emergence of leaflets was worrying because careless utterances and the other threats were on the increase just few days to the polls.

He said a combination of hate leaflets, increased misuse of social media and careless utterances by politicians are serious matters that should not be taken lightly.

"We are asking our young people on social media not to be drawn in these issues and be the cause of threats to other communities," Kimengich said.

He said religious leaders have taken a step and met with authorities and observers to discuss the election preparedness in the region.
