Kibaki cortege leaves Lee funeral for State House

There was tight security in the streets of Nairobi as the body of former President Mwai Kibaki left the Lee funeral home. 

The funeral procession left the morgue on Friday morning at 8:30 am for State House where the family will pay their last respect.

There will be a mini service at State House before the procession leaves for Nyayo stadium.

Many Kenyans lined up along roads leading to State House to a catch a glimpse of the cortege as it left Lee Funeral Home.

Sniffer dogs were seen hovering around the morgue as security agents kept guard.

Other security personnel were seen making calls while others gathered together to ensure everything was okay. 

The family members, dressed in black, started trooping at the Lee Funeral Home from 8 am.

Police officers bolstered by the presence of Kenya Defense Forces lined up a number of city roads where Kibaki’s hearse was set to pass through.

The body will be transported in a military gun carriage to Nyayo stadium where Kenyans are waiting to bid farewell to the third president.

Members of the public have started arriving at the stadium in readiness for the state funeral.

The public is being subjected to strict security screening before being allowed into the stadium.

They are not being allowed to enter the venue with food items or any bottled liquids like water or juice.

The retired President Kibaki's body has lay in state for three days at Parliament Buildings from Monday to Wednesday. 

During this period, members of the public were allowed to view the body. 

Kibaki will be buried on Saturday, April 30, at his Othaya home in Nyeri County.

The third President will be accorded full military honours and protocols, including full Military Musical Honours and a 19 gun-salute.

President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the death of Kibaki last Friday mid-morning.

Kibaki was sworn into office on December 30, December 2002 as the third President.

He served as Head of State and Government until April 9, 2013.
