You will soon be able to identify boda boda riders operating within Nairobi county using different colour codes, Bodaboda Association of Kenya has now said.
Nairobi County Bodaboda Association chairperson Ken Onyango on Tuesday said, in line with the government’s directive aimed at streamlining the bodaboda sector, they have come up with new measures for the purposes of restoring sanity.
Among the new measures include; the formation of one Sacco within each of the seventeen Nairobi sub-counties where the riders will have a badge and a reflector jacket branded with a specific colour code for easier identification.
“Every single rider will have an identity card completely branded with a Sacco colour he or she is associated with, and it’s different from another Sacco in each of the sub-counties," said Onyango.
"For example, if riders from starehe constituency don a green colour then those from Kamukunji or Kibra or any other sub-county will have a different colour."
In addition to the colour codes, each motorcycle will be mounted with a QR code on its plate that will help people identify the full details of the riders just in case of emergencies or indiscipline cases.
“We are also mounting plates with QR codes on the bikes, the codes once scanned will give you the details of the rider. For instance, his/her area of operation, the name of the Sacco, whether he or she has NHIF cover, his next of keen and actually those specific details like where the rider was born," Onyango noted.
The riders will however have to part with one thousand shillings to cater for the cost of the branded identity cards and reflector jackets.
Onyango also warned riders not to give any money to unregistered Saccos.
He noted that the associations have also waived the registration fees for joining Saccos adding that every rider will have to register afresh just like the way the government is doing with the ongoing digital bodaboda registrations.
This is after a section of boda boda operators claimed that the associations were demanding money from them, which they argue they are unable to raise.
They also claimed that they are not aware of the real requirement the government is asking from them to facilitate the digital registration.
Every boda boda rider is required to have a KRA pin, an Identity card and an active mobile number to ease their registration at any Huduma Centre across the country.
The government has since given them a grace period of 60 days to register afresh where there will be issued a smart driving license after a few days.
