The Kenya Judges and Magistrates Association has overwhelmingly elected Kibera senior principal magistrate Derrick Kuto as their President.
Kuto becomes the first magistrate to head the association.
Kuto gannered 290 votes against Judge Patrick Otieno who had 113 votes in the election was conducted at Sawela lodge, Naivasha where over 500 judges and magistrates converged.
Before his election, Kuto acted as the association's secretary general where he fought for the welfare of judges, magistrate's and Kadhis by advocating for a better pay, working environment, car grants among other issues.
His main task now will be to bring all members together and at the same time fight for their rights.
Kuto had remained optimistic of winning the seat with a landslide and even declared himself the association's president during their AGM.
KMJA lawyer Danston Omari said that more activities will be done immediately the new office takes shape.
"We are going to do what is supposed to be done, our members needs good salaries, car grants, good working environment just but a few things," Omari said.
He urged Kuto to remain focused as he has been, working on uniting all members in the association.
Kuto thanked members for their votes and vowed to fulfill the promises he made to them.
"We are going to do everything for the sake of members and nothing will stop us, we have been elected to serve," he said.
Secretary general elect, Ben Mark had 230 votes against Orlando Mark who got 176 votes.
After he being announced SG elect, Ben Mark said," I will fight for the rights of members even if it means going to see the President."
Renee Kitagwa was elected vice treasurer of the association.
