The National Police Service has said that the Kenya-Ethiopia border is not closed, as has been reported by a section of the media.

This followed the NPS Spokesperson Bruno Shioso's statement on Wednesday, saying that security had been enhanced because of the conflict in Ethiopia.

In a statement on Thursday, the NPS said they have only increased security along the border and the situation remains calm.

"As per our yesterday's statement on the security situation in neighbouring countries, we wish to clarify that the country's border with Ethiopia has not been closed contrary to some erroneous media reporting," the police said.

Shioso on Wednesday called on Kenyan citizens to exercise vigilance and practice caution in their surroundings.

“As an immediate neighbour to some of the affected countries, Kenya may be adversely impacted by the consequences of the event,” Shioso said.

He added that the suspected cases of undocumented aliens and unprocessed immigrants in the country should be immediately reported to the nearest police station.

His statement came after an Oromo group allied with Tigrayan fighters told AFP that Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa could be overrun by rebels within "months if not weeks".

Ethiopia had on Tuesday declared a six-month state of emergency after forces from the northern region of Tigray said they were gaining territory and considering marching on the capital Addis Ababa.

African Union Commission chairperson, Moussa Faki on Tuesday called for an end to hostilities in Ethiopia.

Faki called on the parties involved to embrace dialogue instead of war, to safeguard the territorial integrity, unity and national sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia.
