Former House Speaker Francis ole Kaparo has dumped Deputy President William Ruto and backed ODM leader Raila Odinga for the country’s top seat.

The former chairman of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission made the announcement on Monday during Raila’s regional consultative meeting in Kaijiado.

Kaparo said Raila has the interest of the Maasai Community at heart.

Kaparo was the chairman of the Ruto-led United Republican Party, which was among the 13 parties that folded to form Jubilee coalition in the run up to 2017 elections.

“Even if I am not a member of ODM or Jubilee parties, let me tell you the truth, the man (Raila) cannot harm the Masaai community,” Kaparo said.

The declaration points to a major shift in the region’s politics ahead of the next year’s polls.

Also present at the Kajiado meeting were Governor Joseph Ole Lenku (Kajiado), Environment Cabinet secretary Keriako Tobiko, Narok Senator Ledama ole Kina among others.
