Former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel has been arrested from his home in Rongai, Kajiado County over ongoing clashes in Laikipia.

He was later moved to the DCI Nairobi area for questioning and possible transfer to other places including Nakuru and Nanyuki.

It is not clear what he was being accused of over the clashes in Laikipia but police said he was a person of interest and would be allowed to talk to journalists later.

His supporters started to mill outside the Nairobi DCI offices on learning he was there.

The former MP was later driven to Milimani law courts by police who were armed with a sworn affidavit.

The officers planned to seek permission from police to hold Lempurkel for days as they investigate him over the chaos.

It is not the first time the former MP is being held over the clashes in the area.

He is currently facing charges in court over past skirmishes in the area.

This came as the government launched an operation in Laikipia Nature Conservancy targeting armed herders operating there.

On Tuesday, Rift Valley Regional Coordinator George Natembeya claimed some of the attackers are armed with sophisticated weapons than the police.

“While our officers are using AK 47 and G3 rifles, the bandits are using M16 and other heavy rifles which are usually used by foreign armies,” he said.

“We do not know how they get these heavy weapons.”
