Six people have died this evening at Shiners Boys along the Nakuru-National Highway when a lorry collided head on with a passenger van.

Nakuru County Commander, Beatrice Kiraguri said the dead were six men and one woman.

She said the driver of the Public Service Vehicle belonging to North Rift Shuttle is among those who succumbed.

"It is not clear how many people survived from the accident but police officers are visiting hospitals to establish the number," she said.

Kiraguri said according to the North Rift Manifesto, the matatu had seven passengers.

"We cannot say with certainty that it had seven passengers because one can never be sure if the driver picked extra travellers along the way," she said.

Kiraguri said the truck driver lost control, swerved into the opposite lane and collided head on with the matatu.

She added that the number of people in the lorry during the 6:30pm accident is not known too.

"The lorry was headed to Nairobi while the matatu was moving in the opposite direction," she said.

The commander said the bodies were taken to Nakuru County Mortuary while the vehicles were towed to Nakuru Central Police Station
