IEBC requires Sh40.9 billion to carry out 2022 General Election — Chebukati

Chebukati however says IEBC has only been allocated Sh26bn by the National Treasury.

The IEBC has announced that it requires Sh40.9 billion to conduct the August 9, 2022 polls.

IEBC boss Wafula Chebukati described the amount as the "bare minimum" amid concerns that the cost of elections in Kenya keeps soaring.

Chebukati said of the amount, Sh40.3 billion would be spent on activities revolving around election operations such as voter registration.

He said Sh588 million would be spent on procuring items for Covid-19 prevention protocol such as thermometer guns, sanitisers, soap and washing points.

The Chairman however said they have only been allocated Sh26 billion by the National Treasury, leaving a deficit of over Sh14 billion.

Chebukati spoke on Monday at a media stakeholders' workshop with the IEBC in Mombasa.

He at the same time announced that the commission will reject political parties nomination lists that do not adhere to the two-thirds gender rule.

Chebukati said the High Court had directed political parties to ensure that their party list adheres to the gender rule and specifically asked IEBC to monitor enforcement.
