Delta construction workers drivers who are working at the Expressway along Mombasa Road have started their strike, after a three-month delay in pay.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, the drivers said that they have not been paid for the last three months, a statement that was dismissed by the company’s director.
Speaking to the journalists at the same point through the phone, the Director at Delta Construction Samuel Ndungu said that some of the drivers have been siphoning liters of fuel while on duty.
“The drivers have been stealing our fuel, which is 60 per cent of the fuel every day,” Ndungu said.
He said that they discovered that some of the drivers have been siphoning fuel from their trucks at some stages.
“We put some fuel centers on the vehicles, which we did not tell them. We have done our analysis, and they have stolen a lot of fuel.”
According to the director, 90 per cent of drivers have been benefiting from the stolen fuel and might be replaced after failing to agree on salary deduction.
According to the director, the culprits had been warned individually but the habit has not stopped.
On October 29, the company gave the first warning to Peter Gateiya Wanjiru of vehicle KCZ 126V for siphoning 24.7 litres on October 14.
Kivuva Musangari of KCZ 206Y was also warned on October 15.
On October 16, the company dismissed Zachariah Muchungu for failing to explain the allegations against him of siphoning fuel.
Anthony Ngugi Bundi and Henry Mwangi have also been fired for failing to defend their misconduct.
According to the November 19 travel sheet and fuel report shared by the company, two drivers were found guilty of siphoning fuel.
The company said that it is ready to negotiate with affected drivers who are willing to have their salaries deducted to settle the amount.
