Omar Lali, the 54-year-old beachboy from Lamu believed to be Keroche heiress Tecra Muigai's boyfriend, lives life in the fast lane.
Like many beachboys, the smooth-talking Omar is known for his love for moneyed women and partying.
Ever since the death on Saturday of Tecra, Keroche Breweries CEO Tabitha Karanja's daughter, details have emerged of who Omar is and the life he leads.
His neighbours in Shella Beach town say he loves moneyed women, especially white ones.
Shella is a popular residential town for most tourists who visit Lamu.
Being a resident makes it easy for him to meet and interact with rich women, eventually luring them into relationships.
But the relationships don't last, it is said, once Omar gets what he wants. He dumps the woman and moves to the next one with lightning speed.
He is even believed to have sired a child with a white woman.
Omar is known for his sweet tongue and acting the perfect gentleman. It is these qualities, it is believed, that endeared him to Tecra in the first place.
Unconfirmed reports indicate the two first met mid last year when Tecra was stranded over a bill that had accrued at a local hotel where she had been staying.
Omar moved in to beseech the hotel administration to go easy on her and allow her to pay in instalments to avoid embarrassing her.
There are also rumours that Omar, a native of the Bajuni community, uses ‘other powers’ to lure unsuspecting rich women into relationships before fleecing them.
Many people said the beaded necklaces and many rings worn by Omar are, in fact, powerful charms.
Omar loves dogs and is often spotted walking several canines on leashes on the beaches of Shella and in Lamu town.
Tecra is said to have arrived in Lamu early last month to visit Omar. The two were known for their expensive drinking sprees.
She died on Saturday after suffering cerebral-edema (fluid build-up around the brain) resulting from a fall from a staircase at a house she shared with Omar, on April 27.
Omar was arrested on Sunday by homicide detectives over suspicions that he could have been involved in her death.
He is said to have given different accounts on Tecra’s death, leading police to believe he was hiding something.
Omar was presented before the Lamu law courts on Monday via video link but no charges were preferred.
Principal magistrate Allan Temba allowed police to hold him for 21 days at Lamu police station pending investigations. The case will be mentioned on May 26.
Tecra will be buried in Naivasha, but by press time yesterday the family was still in talks to decide the burial day.
