Fake US dollars

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has arrested a foreigner with fake $15 million at a house on Pangani estate, Nairobi.

Yassin Osman, 29, was nabbed after police officers raided the Eden House Flats in Pangani Shopping Center on Monday morning following a tip-off. The cash translates into about Sh1.5 billion. The notes were stacked and packed in brown envelopes and concealed in a black bag, the officers said.

“The man was working in cahoots with other people in the city,” Nairobi police commandant Philip Ndolo said.

The suspect is to be arraigned today. The operation was mounted to track suspects involved in fake money printing syndicate. “I may not have complete information. The DCI is investigating,” Ndolo said.

This is the latest move by the DCI to clear the city of foreigners involved dubious businesses. In May, the police pounced on nine suspects with fake US dollars worth Sh190 million. They were Olivier Mango, Bongo Ulerech, George Sr Gboe, Richard Kabasili, Timothy Muhumuza, Egid Musolieva, Ken Lugwili and Brian Kimani.

Seven among them were foreigners from Rwanda, Uganda and Congo. Statistics show Nairobi and Mombasa are top hideouts for foreigners involved in the fake money printing business.

In August, police officers in Mombasa arrested a Cameroonian couple and a Nigerian suspected to be printing fake money.

In January, police officers busted an international money-printing syndicate with links in the United States and seized Sh6.67 million in Sh1,000 fake notes, which were in the final stages of production in a house in Mtwapa.
