Two suspected gangsters have been shot dead by police officers in Nairobi.

Nairobi regional police commander Philip Ndolo on Satruday said the duo was killed after they defied an order by the cops to surrender and instead shot at the officers.

The incident happened along Luthuli Avenue within the CBD on  Saturday morning.

Ndolo said the officers were acting on a tip-off from members of the public.

“Police officers who were on foot patrol, acting on information pursued four suspects along Luthuli Avenue towards the scene of shooting at the intersection of Ukwala road and Mwatate Lane about 300 metres West of Kamukunji police station," Ndolo said.

"Police officers challenged them to stop but they defied the orders and started to fire at the officers who responded and managed to fatally injure two of the robbers."

The police chief divulged that the incident was reported to the station at 2am.

Police recovered a Ceska pistol with 12 bullets of 9mm bearing two serial numbers F4388 on the pistol grip assembly and F2909 on slide assembly, an Administration Police certificate bearing the names F/No. 23238106 APC Johnstone Likhakasi and a black and red mask from the scene of crime.

Ndolo said the bodies were removed to the City mortuary awaiting postmortem.

He said police were in pursuit of the assailants who managed to escape during the incident.
