Zambian High Commissioner airlifted to Nairobi Hospital

Two diplomats injured in a road accident in Athi River along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway were on Wednesday airlifted to Nairobi Hospital.

They are Zambia High Commissioner to Kenya Brenda Muntemba and another diplomat Kama Wasa.

Their driver Joseph Ogutu The driver, whose injuries were not deemed life-threatening, was transferred by ambulance under the supervision of the medics and the Kenyan authorities to a hospital of the family’s choice, Avenue hospital in Parklands where he is receiving treatment.

The High Commissioner designate of Botswana, Duke Lefhoko and his driver,

Maurice Maweu, also travelled by road to Nairobi on Tuesday night.

The diplomats were involved in a road accident on Tuesday night at Lukenya in Machakos.

“The diplomats were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital after the accident. The drivers of the truck and Toyota Isis who were also involved in the accident escaped unhurt. The diplomatic vehicles had extensive damage,” the police said.

Machakos County Government adviser on Health Ancient Kituku told the press that the evacuation was successful.

The injured were airlifted

by a Kenya Air Force chopper a few minutes past 11.00am.

Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Maliti said the patients were transferred to Nairobi not because

Machakos Level 5 Hospital lacks the

capacity to manage their conditions, but because their kin

requested.

The Foreign Ministry

in a statement said the government will offer any assistance needed as the envoys recuperate.

Foreign Affairs PS Ambassador Macharia Kamau also thanked Machakos county, Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya Defence Forces, Amref and the Nairobi Hospital for their swift response and cooperation after the accident.
