Legislator Babu Owino and his bodyguard Fanuel Owino were charged with assault on Monday.
They allegedly attacked David Gichagu at Fortis Towers in Westlands, Nairobi, on January 11. The two are said to have committed the crime with accomplices who were not in court.
Babu, who is Embakasi East MP, was separately charged with two other counts of using abusive language and creating disturbance.
He and Owino were
released on personal bonds of Sh20,000 each.
Babu was arrested outside Parliament on Friday
and released on Sunday after spending two nights at Parklands police cells.
The MP linked his incarceration to a petition filed against his elections win.
The first time lawmaker was released after interventions by legislators including Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja.
"As much as he has committed a crime, let him be charged before the courts. This notion and culture that you can arrest someone, for an offence he committed a week ago, on a Friday and keep him in cells for two days is playing politics," Sakaja said.
"Police should leave politics to politicians."
