Members of the Kisii, Kipsigis and Maasai communities at the Narok-Kisii border have been urged to live in peace.

Narok county commissioner Moffatt Kangi and his Kisii counterpart Kula Hache addressed a joint peace meeting at Olmelil shopping centre on Wednesday.

He said the government cannot sit back and watch things get out of control.

Kangi gave the chiefs of Kapsasian, Njipship, Pimbiniet and Mogor seven days to recover stolen cattle or be punished. Cattle theft is the major source of conflict, he said.

“God made you neighbours and nobody can change that. It is upon you to identify criminals living among you and condemn them, not the entire community,” Kangi said. Hache urged those buying land from the three communities to involve family members, administrators and lawyers during transactions to avoid future conflicts.

“Any land dispute on the Narok side or the Kisii side should be handled by the respective Lands officers. If the parties are not satisfied ,they can come to our offices, rather than fight,” she said.

The two administrators said security personnel will be stationed at the border.

Those found with illegal firearms will be punished, Hache said.

Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno had a rough time addressing the meeting. A section of the crowd accused him of being behind the violence. They said after he visited the area on Sunday, more fighting broke out.

But Ng’eno said, “I am the only legislator who has shown up for this meeting. This is because I am interested in peace.”
