Nairobi West MCA Maurice Gari yesterday dismissed as rumours allegations he snatched a woman’s handbag and stole Sh70,000.
He told the Star the claims by a woman identified only as Judy, an attendant at Devinne Boutique in Magharibi Place next to T-Mall on Langata Road, are false.
Judy visited Langata police station and recorded a statement accusing the MCA of stealing her money on Saturday.
She said the MCA bought two perfumes – VIP and Shalne Halua – worth Sh10,000 on February 10.
However, on Saturday, Gari returned the perfumes, saying they were fake.
“When I talked to him, he declined to listen to me. He jumped into the shop, opened the drawer and took away my handbag, which had Sh70,000,” Judy told the Star on the phone.
She said the incident happened at 2.30pm and she proceeded to Langata police station to record a statement.
However, Gari said he learnt of the allegations when several journalists contacted him for comment.
He said on February 10, when he is said to have bought the perfumes, he was in Naivasha attending the launch of the Nairobi government 10-year strategic plan.
Gari said he does not use perfumes, as he is allergic.
He said on Saturday, he was at his farm in Ongata Rongai, where he is building a house.
The legislator said he does not know Judy or the boutique.
He visited Langata police station and asked officers if they were looking for him.
Judy did not clarify whether it was Maurice Gari or Maurice Akuk of Nyayo Highrise who snatched her bag.
Akuk denied the allegations.
But Judy said she can identify the man who took her handbag.
