TECHNICAL University of Kenya chancellor Manu Chandaria has urged the graduates to volunteer in organisations to gain practical work-place skills.

“This will help you be marketable,” he said.

Chandaria spoke at the campus in Nairobi during its third graduation ceremony.

He told the 3,000 students that employers hire the best job applicants – those with special skills required for a particular job.

“No job will come on a silver platter. You must be ready to fold your sleeves and dirty your hands to achieve what you want in life,” Chandaria said.

He said only the fittest and smartest will survive the harsh labour market.

Chandaria said challenges are the true test of character.
