THE widower of freedom fighter Wambui Otieno, Peter Mbugua, is contesting her will. He claims she was not mentally well when she wrote it.

“The deceased did not have the necessary mental capacity to know what she was doing at the time of making the will due to illness.” Mbugua says in documents filed at a Milimani court Mbugua.

His claims Wambui did not provide for him sufficiently in her will. In her will Wambui wrote that Mbugua will own at least one car, a Toyota G-Touring.

However he claims that a Toyota Harrier registered in his name was given to one of her daughters and this does not make sense because she is the one who purchased the car had it registered in his name.

Wambui distributed the rest of her wealth which includes cars, houses and money among her 10 children and eight grandchildren. She gave her home in Karen to her daughter Gladwell Otieno and sons Jairus Ougo and Fredrick Munyua.

The Upper Matasia home where she is buried and had wanted her first husband SM Otieno buried, “according to his wishes” was given to Jane Nunga and Lewis Waiyaki.

Wambui and Mbugua had a civil wedding in July 2003 at Sheria house and got married in church later. At the time Mbugua was 25 years old and Wambui 67. Their marriage raised a lot of controversy and criticism with many claiming that the former stonemason was only after the her wealth. But Mbugua denied the allegations and said that he was in love with Wambui.

Mbugua’s mother, then 53 years old, refused to accept Wambui as her daughter-in-law and Wambui’s daughters refused to attend the wedding. They said they were not happy that their mother was getting married to a man 42 years younger than her.

Mbugua allegedly had a fiancée who he left for Wambui. His mother died a few days after the wedding. Wambui died on August 30, 2011. Her first husband was S M Otieno a prominent Luo lawyer.
