Members of the Judiciary on Saturday showed up in large numbers for the burial of Makadara Law Courts slain Magistrate, Monica Kivuti.

Kivuti was buried in Machakos County.

In attendance were Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Governor Wavinya Ndeti, Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu, Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu and Chief Registrar Winfridah Mokaya among others.

Mwilu condemned the shooting of Kivuti, saying life is God-given and should only be taken away by God alone.

"If someone is unhappy with what the courts do, they should not kill us instead appeal our decisions. Monica's life should not have been taken away when she was doing her job," she said.

"Every single judge and magistrate is in danger from senseless people who do not appreciate the rule of law. Please stop killing us."

Kalonzo noted that having a tent for a court is unacceptable, as the Constitution 2010 was to strengthen the Judiciary independence and specifically funding.

Kivuti died of gunshot wounds to the chest and left hip on June 14, 2024, while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.

Kivuti was appointed as a Resident Magistrate on July 17, 2013, and posted at Kiambu Law Courts. She later served at Baricho Law Courts and thereafter Makadara Law Courts as Principal Magistrate.
