Ruto warns school heads harassing parents over tuition fees

"Managers of institutions should stop taking advantage of the vulnerability of our people."

President William Ruto has ordered heads of institutions to allow pupils and students undertake studies irrespective of whether they have paid tuition or not.

Ruto said the government has already released money for capitation and it is 'immoral' for school heads to continue harassing parents and students over nonpayment of tuition.

"We released Sh62 billion in January to educate our learners. But even after this development there are school heads telling parents to pay school fees because the government has not released money for schools," Ruto said.

"We know the importance of education and we want all our children to go school. Managers of institutions should stop taking advantage of the vulnerability of our people to force parents pay school fees in the pretext that the government has not released money."

Ruto made the remarks on Sunday on arrival at MachakusI Primary School for an interdenominational prayer meeting at Machakusi ACK church in Teso South constituency, Busia.

Ruto arrived in Teso on Sunday morning for the interdenominational prayer meeting.

He said the Education ministry will closely monitor operations in institutions to ensure all learners remain in school.

The commander in chief who is vising Busia for the third time since he assumed office from his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta, is accompanied by by a host of leaders from across the political divide.

After the prayer session, the Head of State is scheduled to officially launch the multi-million Malaba-Malakisi water and sewerage project at Amoni before addressing a rally in Malaba town.

Thereafter, he will cruise to Ang’urai where he will address another rally before touring Kolanya Girls National School, according to Teso North MP Oku Kanya.

Among leaders accompanying the President include Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Principal Administrative Secretary in the Executive Office of the President Arthur Osiya, Governors Paul Otuoma (Busia) and Kenneth Lusaka (Bungoma) , Sports CS Ababu Namwamba, Deputy Governor Arthur Odera and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises PS Susan Mangeni.

Others are MPs Oku Kaunya (Teso North), Mary Emase (Teso South), Phelix Odiwuor popularly known as Jalango (Langata) and John Waluke (Sirisia).
