Some residents at Kasarani in Nairobi on Tuesday vacated a building that was showing signs of collapsing. The building had cracks and had started sinking.
One resident told the Star that the crack started due to ongoing construction next to it.
"They were construction something, a foundation behind our building. They used machines to dig up the ground. During the day we could feel tremors from our houses," a resident said.
She said at 1 am, she heard shouts that residents were being told to leave the building since it had cracked in the middle. She added that the crack line could be seen from far.
"However, the landlord came and told us nothing is wrong that we should just stay as it's a little crack," she said.
But looking at the state of the building, the residents decided to vacate. They packed their belongings and were loading them on trucks just a day later.
Behind the building where the new construction has been happening, water accumulated in the ground that had been dug up.
