Some of the protester came out carrying a coffin labelled 'Ruto must go'.

After a calm morning in Kisumu City, the Opposition stronghold has experienced an action filled afternoon, as police engaged anti-government protesters.

Teargas and running battles became the order of the day after police stopped the protesters from accessing the Kisumu Central Business District.

They in turn hurled stones at the police, prompting them to use teargas to disperse the crowds.

The showdown came after the are experienced a calm morning, despite the Opposition saying that protests would start as early as 6am.

The Kisumu CBD generally remained deserted as most businesses closed.

The government has also stepped security in areas believed to be hotspots.
