Uhuru to Treasury: Use Sh2bn proceeds of graft to help the poor

Says State is pursuing all the available options to protect its citizens from the virus.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the National Treasury to use Sh2 billion proceeds collected from the corrupt to help the vulnerable people in the society.

Addressing the nation on Monday from State House, the President said his government is pursuing all the available options to protects its citizens from the virus.

The president said that every shilling saved from salary cuts and allowances will be used for masks, personal protective equipment and other initiatives towards fighting the novel coronavirus.

Uhuru urged Kenyans to take the diseases as a virus threat that does not select people based on race, class or any status.

"We have an additional 16 people who have tested positive bringing the national tally to 158. This virus is unforgiving and must be arrested," Uhuru said.

"I will go to any lawful length to respond to Covid-19. Without decisive action, the virus will continue to spread with its lethal effect".

The President on Monday said the country had confirmed 16 more cases in the last 24 hours, raising the country's total to 158.

Two more patients succumbed to the Covid-19.

Uhuru also declared the cessation of movement into and out of Nairobi, Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa Counties for 21 days.

The Nairobi directive starts today (Monday) at 7 pm while that of the other counties will begin from Wednesday.

 

Uhuru said a majority of people who have contracted the disease are Nairobi residents, Kilifi, Kwale and Mombasa counties.

     The President said 82 per cent of Covid-19 have been in Nairobi and 14 per cent have been in the other Coastal counties.
