Residents of Bumula and Sirisia constituencies in Bungoma have decried poor roads and bridges that are affecting their daily activities.

Toloso bridge that connects Bumula and Sirisia constituencies is in a poor state after residents' appeals to area leaders bore no fruit.

The bridge was built way back in 1968 and it has been poorly maintened.

Speaking to the press on Saturday at the bridge, residents led by Erick Wekesa said during heavy rain students using the bridge risk their lives as the river overflows.

Wekesa said people had lost balance and fallen into the river because the bridge lacks steel irons.

"The steel irons that were installed beside this bridge were stolen by unknown people who might have sold them as scrap metal. We are very unhappy with how our two MPs are treating us," he said.

He asked Sirisia MP John Waluke and his Bumula counterpart Mwambu Mabonga to team up and help rebuild the bridge. Farmers from Sirisia and Bumula use it to transport their goods to Mayanja market.

"This bridge is going to be used as a marking scheme to vote for leaders in both constituencies in the August polls. We don't want to vote for people who ignore us and only appear during elections to feed us with empty promises," he said.

Learners at Mukwa and Tembelela primary schools and Mukwa Secondary School are most affected as they struggle to cross the bridge.

"Parents are now thinking how they can transfer their children from schools to rnearby schools because they are scared of this bridge," he said.
