National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) have been deployed to mobilise youth and achieve a 100 per cent transition rate into polytechnics for skills training.
Principal Secretary for Technical and Vocational Education and Training Esther Mworia said the government has significantly expanded TVET institutions, which now have the capacity to accommodate more young people.
Mworia said President William Ruto’s vision is to industrialise the country and achieve the Singapore dream, but this cannot be realised without a well-trained workforce.
She said industrialisation depends on four key elements: markets, money, machines and manpower.
“Without the requisite manpower, we cannot industrialise and achieve the Singapore dream,” she said.
Mworia said government officers would help mobilise youth to enrol in TVET institutions so they can acquire skills needed by industries and contribute to the country’s growth. She noted that investors are keen on countries with an adequate supply of skilled labour.
“This can be achieved if young people are equipped with skills through our TVET colleges,” she said.
“It is the responsibility of NGAO officers to mop up youth and tell them that we have well-equipped TVET institutions that can equip them with skills within a short time,” the PS said.
Mworia spoke at the Eldoret National Polytechnic during a meeting with NGAO teams from Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties to discuss the TVET enrolment programme.
Also present was the polytechnic’s principal Dr Charles Koech. She said the meeting aimed to engage NGAO officers on how to reach all eligible youth and sensitise them to the opportunities available in TVET institutions.
Mworia said the TVET sector had adopted a modular training system that allows learners to undertake six-month courses, obtain certificates, join industry and later return for further training.
She acknowledged that the university and college funding model still faced challenges but said the government was working to streamline it and make training more accessible.
