The Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Services has called for concerted efforts to address the persistent challenge of student unrest in schools.

Speaking during an impromptu visit to Mogotio Township Secondary School, Cabinet Secretary Hanna Wendot Cheptumo challenged parents to take a more active role in guiding and mentoring their children to help curb the unruly behaviour witnessed in some schools in recent months.

The CS who was flanked by area MP Reuben Kiborek expressed concern over recent incidents of school unrest, warning students of the severe consequences of engaging in criminal acts such as arson and destruction of property.

She noted that such offences carry upto a minimum of 10 year imprisonment hence derailing the future prospects of those involved while subjecting their parents to emotional distress and financial burdens arising from damages.

She reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring equitable access to quality education for all learners, noting that the education sector received the largest allocation in this 2026/27 budget.

She announced that her ministry, through the Child Welfare Society of Kenya under the State Department for Children Services, will scale up mentorship programmes in schools to promote discipline, personal development and the overall well-being of learners.

Some 23 secondary schools received food supplies towards the school feeding programme

The CS also assured parents and learners of the government's commitment to enhancing the safety and protection of children both within and outside school environments.

During the visit, Wendot spearheaded the distribution of food supplies to 23 mixed day and boarding schools in Mogotio Constituency, benefiting 4,400 vulnerable learners under the school feeding programme.

She said the free school lunches had improved learning outcomes especially in day schools by increasing attendance, concentration and academic performance among learners.

Other schools she visited include Mogotio Township Senior School, Oldebess Senior School and Oterit Senior School.

The feeding and mentorship programme she said provided an important platform to engage with learners, educators and community stakeholders on strengthening child welfare interventions and advancing a holistic approach to child development.

"Ensuring that children have access to quality education, protection, healthcare and supportive learning environments remains central to the Government’s agenda for inclusive and sustainable development", she stated.
